Wild West Day

Mark your Calendars! On Sunday, September 26, 2010 Wild West Day will provide families in the Eagle Valley with a most remarkable opportunity - they can have a whole lot of fun and do a whole lot of good.

Eagle County School District’s nine elementary schools are the beneficiaries of this annual hoe-down fund-raiser, held at the 4 Eagle Ranch. This year’s fun marks the 20th anniversary of Wild West Day, a fund-raiser that is the envy of PTAs statewide.

Knowing that families and businesses are hit hard and hit often with donation requests, Wild West Day was conceived to give area residents a request respite. By providing local residents with a one-time-catch-all option, Wild West Day has successfully tapped a wellspring of good will. Last year’s event tally topped $5000+ - an impressive figure for a one-day celebration. Wild West Day is made possible through the efforts and donations of countless area businesses and residents.

For more information on how you can graciously donate and participate (including the online auction!), visit their website: www.wildwestday.org

Getting Kids Hooked on Fishing

by L.S. Burns
Teaching your children to appreciate the wilderness is as simple as getting them outside. “There is really no better activity to introduce kids to the outdoors than fishing,” said Jerry Neal, the Colorado Division of Wildlife public information officer. “We have such an amazing resource right here in our backyard with some of the best fishing anywhere in the west.” Even better, kids under age 16 don’t need a license to fish. So round up the bait and tackle and consider spending a sunny day at one of these Eagle County fishing spots.
Young anglers will likely enjoy a visit to Sylvan Lake State Park, just 10 miles south of Eagle. The 42-acre lake is stocked with rainbow trout but also has a self-sustaining brook and brown trout population. Be aware, the lake is situated in a state park, so a parks pass is required, and it’s worth it. The lake is far enough away from town to feel like a real mountain adventure. Plus the park lends fishing poles to kids that don’t have their own equipment and they offer kids fishing clinics. While swimming is not allowed, canoes, sea kayaks and paddle boats are available for rent Memorial Day through Labor Day on a first come, first served basis. Call 970-328-2021 for more information.
Nottingham Lake is a popular spot to take kids fishing because its location in the center of Avon is convenient. Fish for rainbow, brown or cutthroat trout from shore or, in the summer, you can rent paddle boats from the log cabin. There’s also a bike path around the lake, and plenty of playground equipment so there’s lots to do if the little ones need a break from the casting/reeling routine. Visit www.avon.org to learn more.
The Vail Recreation District offers fly fishing and stream ecology classes for both kids and adults during the summer. The two-day classes include an introduction to the river and its inhabitants, and an overview of the sport. Attendees will learn about fly fishing equipment, safety, etiquette and how to set up their gear. There’s also a casting clinic, and information about fly selection and fish handling techniques. Bring your own gear or borrow theirs. For more information about times, dates and cost, call 970-479-2291 or visit www.vailrec.com.
If you’re interested in exploring other family-friendly fishing spots in Colorado, visit the Division of Wildlife’s interactive map of “101 Places to Take a Kid Fishing” on their Web site at http://wildlife.state.co.us/Fishing/WhereToGo/101Places.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife’s aquatic section manages more than 2,800 lakes, reservoirs and ponds in Colorado. In addition, fisheries’ managers oversee more than 5,000 segments on about 10,000 miles of streams. The state’s 19 hatcheries produce nearly 80 million fish annually for stocking across Colorado.

Skate Sessions

Check out these
area skateboard parks    by L.S. Burns
Lips, ledges, drops and bowls. No, this isn’t secret code, it’s skateboard lingo. And for those kids (and kids at heart) who live to fly over concrete and launch themselves through the air, Eagle County has plenty of parks.

Stop by the skate park at Freedom Park in Edwards’ Milller Ranch on any given day to see how popular skateboarding is in the area. From 3-year-olds racing around on scooters, to skateboard pros, the more than 30,000 square foot park is often one of the busiest areas in the complex. There are three bowls, a rail and step section, a fish ladder for younger skaters and a large flat area in between. The area is open from dawn until dusk and both skateboards and bikes are allowed. Riders are encouraged to wear helmets and pads. During the summer, WECMRD offers skateboarding camps for beginner through advanced skaters, from age 6 to 14. Campers will learn about etiquette, safety and street and bowl skating. Visit www.wecmrd.org or call970-328-5277.

The Vail Skatepark returns to the top level of the Lionshead parking structure this summer through fall. The park is free and open to the public, from dawn until dusk. Helmets are required and wrist and knee pads are recommended. For kids who’d like a few tips from the pros, instructors give skateboard clinics Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon (June 15 - Aug. 17). The instructors teach everything from basic skills and etiquette to perfecting a board slide or kick flip. The clinics are open to kids ages 7 to 14 and there are also private lessons available. The clinics are $25 ($20 for Eagle County residents) or purchase five sessions for $100 ($75 for residents). Visit www.vailrec.com/skatepark.cfm or call 970-479-2292.

Gypsum’s Town Hall Park, located at 50 Lundgren Boulevard, is home to a skate park that is  open to skate boards, roller blades, traditional skates, scooters and bicycles.

“The park is a pretty cool facility,” said Dawn Ritts of the town of Gypsum. “There are a couple bowls, a ‘fun box’ and plenty of lips, ledges and drops for skaters to play on.”

The park is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the summer. Safety equipment, including helmets, gloves, knee and elbow pads, wrist supports and proper shoes, is recommended. Dogs are not allowed. Visit www.townofgypsum.com.

CJs Boardshop, located in Gypsum, offers lessons at its 5-foot half pipe in the morning and afternoons and includes one coach for every five students, a 15-minute supervised break and video review for each student after class. There are girls-only classes offered. Classes are sold in packages — buy five classes for $20 each, 10 classes for $18 each or 20 classes for $14 each. Call 970-328-3113 for more information.

If you or your child is a skateboard fanatic, consider driving over Vail pass to visit Woodward at Copper Mountain. Inside “The Barn” skaters will find an 8-foot bowl, a 4-foot mini ramp and a 2-foot micro-mini ramp, all coated in Skatelite surface coating. There’s also a 1,600 square-foot mini street course and a 5-foot drop into a foam pit. During the summer, the facility offers week-long skate camps, which include trips to various skate parks around Colorado. Most camps are for kids age 10 and older, though there’s one camp for kids from 8 to 12 years old.

Summer camps can be pre-booked by calling a Copper Mountain Vacation Specialist at 888-350-1544, at The Barn 970-968-3400, or The Cage 970-968-3096 or visit www.woodwardatcopper.com.

Affordable Family Golf

Nestled in the Eagle Valley, Gypsum Creek Golf Course is a Pete Dye designed 18-hole Championship course for players of all caliber.  Opening as Cotton Ranch Golf Club in 1997, the Town of Gypsum recently purchased the course and hired Edge Golf Group to manage the facility.  Spread out over a steep, sage-covered mesa, this challenging course beguiles golfers with its splendid natural scenery and rolling fairways flanked by native pinion and juniper trees.
No matter your age, Gypsum Creek is the place to be.  Whether it’s the First Tee program, summer men’s and ladies’ leagues, lessons or clinics, we offer many opportunities to be involved.  We are always looking for outreach opportunities in the community and the First Tee program put on by The Youth Foundation is a great way to get kids involved in golf while learning integral life skills.  The summer golf leagues are open to players of all skill levels giving golfers the opportunity to learn and play new formats each week.  Our lessons and
clinics are a fun and engaging way to learn or polish your skills in a friendly atmosphere.

Family Fun Begins with Glenwood Canyon Zipline Adventures

Glenwood Canyon Resort, home of the popular Rock Gardens Rafting, has added a new attraction for the 2010 summer season. Glenwood Canyon Zipline Adventures features three ziplines that traverse the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon. In addition to rafting, visitors have the opportunity to experience the exhilaration of zipping across the canyon, not once, but twice!
“We’ve got spectacular views, amazing rafting, top-notch camping facilities and now with our zipline, visitors can experience Glenwood Canyon in a whole new way,” said Kevin Schneider, owner of Glenwood Canyon Resort.
Ziplines are becoming an increasingly popular family activity. With Glenwood Canyon Zipline Adventures, kids of all ages can experience the thrill of flying across Glenwood Canyon suspended thirty five feet above the Colorado River. Visitors “gear up” in a harness, helmet and gloves, climb the launch tower, clip into a pulley and step off for the ride of their lives! The force of gravity zips guests down the cable, high above the river to the landing platform on the other side. A zip back across the canyon completes the exciting round-trip ride.
Glenwood Canyon Zipline Adventures is the new sister company of Rock Gardens Rafting which has over 35 years experience in providing thrilling outdoor recreation and whitewater activities in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. In addition to the zipline, the resort has added the new High Ropes Adventure Course. Here, guests are secured in harnesses and can test their nerves, balance, and strength. Course features include a rock climbing wall, leap of faith challenge jump, swinging steps bridge and more.
Glenwood Canyon Zipline Adventures is based at the Glenwood Canyon Resort at the No Name exit 119 off of I-70, just 1½ miles east of Glenwood Springs. For more information about Glenwood Canyon Zipline Adventures, visit www.glenwoodcanyonzipline.com

Shaun White off the snow

Olympic gold medalist talks to The Parents Handbook about meeting the president, his side gig as a clothing designer and why it’s important to give back
by L.S. Burns
Turns out snowboarder Shaun White stands out off the snow nearly as much as he does on it. This spring, Shaun, and a few other Olympic gold medalists, visited the White House to meet President Obama, the First Lady and Vice President Biden. Shaun didn’t realize there was a dress code.
“I knew I was going to meet the president, so I knew I had to wear something respectable,” he said during an interview with the Parent’s Handbook. ”I ended up going all black with some jeans, my Wolverine boots, and this cool shirt I have.” While Shaun didn’t mean to stand out, he certainly did. But in the end it worked out well for the 23-year-old.
“Since they were doing some group tour, and I didn’t have the dress code, I ended up going in the backdoor of the White House and meeting a lot of the President’s personal staff. I even got to eat a BLT sandwich — it was rad!”
That’s Shaun for you. The athlete is well known for his keen fashion sense on and off the slopes, which is something Target noticed too. The national chain carries Shaun’s clothing line, and starting this summer, will carry his shoes too. The designs are inspired by the professional skater and snowboarder’s lifestyle and incorporate designs by his older brother, Jesse. “I end up riding and skating so much, that I can’t really be in the design studio working on the line,” Shaun said. “(Jesse) sends me designs and styles when I’m on the road and then I can give feedback.”
The shoes will come in colors like electric blue, gray and black. The apparel collection features jeans, cardigans, jackets and t-shirts all for less than $34.99.
Target began sponsoring Shaun in 2002, well before the athlete became the first person to win gold at both the Summer and Winter X-Games. It didn’t take long for him to get involved with the Target House, a long term care facility for children and their families at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. As a small child, Shaun underwent two open heart surgeries to fix a defect in one of his heart valves.
“During that time my mom was pretty much living at a hospital,” he said. “When Target approached me with the possibility of fixing up one of the rooms at the Target House, I knew I had to get involved.”
Shaun and Jesse teamed up to design the “Shaun White Great Room,” replete with edgy Native American and ‘70s-inspired rock n’ roll elements, flat screen televisions, an acrylic foosball table and plenty of games.
“The best part was when the room was complete, I visited and the kids were really using the stuff we created,” he said.
